Thinking Pink, Feeling Blue in Shinjuku

March 10th, 2010 | 8 Comments | Posted in In the News, Journal, Tokyo

Pink FloydWas at the office in Shinjuku most of the day today. Was busy with the usual stuff and kept at my various projects and duties until I decided it was time to take a break and have a little sneaky peaky at da interwebz.

First stop, as usual, BBC World News. And the top stories were?

Ah, who the fuck cares? Same old shit, different day… British soldier tells of woes in the Afghan campaign… Chilean town moved like 10 feet due to the earthquake… Dumb-ass rapper sentenced to prison for dumb-ass behavior… Corey Haim dead at 38…

WTF?!! That dude was already 38?…

I’d just about clicked away when I saw the headline, Pink Floyd Take EMI to Court. Well, that was enough to interest me.

Anyway, I ended up at the wikipedia page for Pink Floyd. I’ll tell you what… I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed reading a wikipedia entry from top to bottom as much as I did this one. I mean, I’ve always loved Floyd, but I learned a lot from that page today.

And, a lot of memories flooded my mind. How cool was Pink Floyd? Yeah, I was born just after “Dark Side of the Moon”, but still got into them when I was in high school. And, I can somewhat remember when “Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2″ used to play on top-40 radio stations back in my elementary school days.

But, when I looked at the dates of birth of the Floyd band members… Holy shit! They’re all older than my parents. But when I thought about it, I thought, Is there any rock band today as cool as Pink Floyd was?

I think not.

Then I read the part about how Alan Parsons engineered “Dark Side of the Moon”. And, I remembered the song by the Alan Parsons Project, “Eye in the Sky”. I remembered how creepy the lyrics were and how the song used to weird me out even though it was a top-40 hit.

Then, I remembered how the musical intro to “Eye in the Sky” was used to fire up Chicago Bulls fans back in the dynasty days, when the team members were introduced before a game. I remembered how the last one introduced was always Michael Jordan and how pumped I used to get knowing that watching any game he was a part of was watching history in the making.

And when I thought about it, I thought, Is there any athlete today that dominates his (her) sport the way Jordan did?

I think not.

Kind of depressing…

Corey Haim I liked him in all the movies he was in however I did not really care for the show the two coreys. And when he was on the Opie and Anthony show he seemed really weird. It is a shame that drugs and substance abuse took his life. I pray that my life will never get so bad that I have to turn to Cocaine. I know from watching the TV show he was molested and some other stuff when he was a child, no one that deserves to go through that. I will pray for the family as the will be the ones most devistated by the loss. RIP Corey

I learned how to read using the liner notes(?) lyrics  in the inside of the “Dark side of the Moon” album.

I saw their concert at a show for the “Learning to Fly” CD and they had the giant pig hanging over the crowd and during the whole 13 song concert they had someone speaking..galic? german? over the announcement PA system constantly so if you were on acid ( like me) you were constantly wondering WHAT THE FUCK is going on??? I REALLY appreciated the effort they made to fuck with our heads.

I may be a hip hop head but in the day…Floyd stole my soul and never let go :)

Pink Floyd - Fearless (Interpolating You’ll Never Walk Alone)

You say the hill’s too steep to climb
    Climb it.
You say you’d like to see me try
    Climbing.

You pick the place and I’ll choose the time
    And I’ll climb
That hill in my own way.
Just wait a while for the right day.
And as I rise above the tree lines and the clouds
I look down, hearing the sound of the things you’ve said today.

    Fucking LOVE that song!!

I’m gonna go add it to my player now!!

A slight detour… but, unavoidable during those dragging periods at the office spent in front of a computer screen.

    @Chris B:
Had no idea you were a Floyd fan. Awesome!

You reminded of the “The Spy Who Shagged Me” where Dr. Evil names one of his projects for world domination “The Alan Parsons Project”.

See what I mean? It’s a creepy song, and the band name doesn’t help.
